Darryl Sutter found out there's something called an NHL Draft every year and decided to do some research.

So the draft lottery results came in last night, and being as time as ever, I'm right here with the news.

The Calgary Flames will be picking...103rd Overall!  This means we have a mild chance at drafting a guy like Greg McKegg who has a really awesome name (and scored 37-48-85 for Erie).

When your team is eliminated from the playoffs (or can't even get in to begin with), it's new team pickin' time.

Yesterday I covered the Western Conference teams to pick from, but that might be too close to home for some of you, so today I'll cover what to love and hate about the Eastern Conference teams.  Here we go!

Fixing the Flames: Roster E-mail

In part two of the season review, I take a look at how to make the Flames a competitive team right now. Tomorrow, how to save the Flames' development system.

There has been many a conversation the past couple weeks regarding the players on the roster. This guy should be traded, this guy should be demoted, etc. I am a big believer in two things when it comes to the franchise: never do anything to make the team worse, and always have talent readily available on the farm. Not only do these two ideals provide stability, they also provide the best chance at building a winning team. I like to us the Devils as an example-they always have a competitive big league team and they do an excellent job developing talent. The best thing about developing your own talent is that you can make 5-year plans for the team, and you are able to mould players into what you need.  So with all that in mind, let's take a look at how to make the Flames better right now.

First, let's establish the players under contract for next year. For the forwards, you have Iginla, Lankgow, Bourque, Stajan, Hagman, Kotalik, Glencross, Moss, Backlund and Dawes. On defense, you have Bouwmeester, Regehr, Giordano, Sarich, Staios and Pardy. In terms of free agents I would keep around, you have Higgins, Mayers, Nystrom, Conroy and White. There are too many names there for a single team, so here's what I would propose:

Only The Lonely (Western Conference) E-mail

Only the lonely have no team, and tomorrow the big dance starts, and that means more hockey for us all. Unfortunately, that does not necessarily mean more hockey from the team you love, something I am learning about for the first time in a long time.

So here we are with meaningful hockey and no meaning for us.  What do we do? Do we pick a team based on location? Do we pick a team based on former players from your team?  Do we pick at team at all?  The answers are no, no, and hell yes.

And to assist with that last one, I've created this handy guide. Today I'll give you a reason to love and hate every western conference team, as well as a difference maker (for better or worse) on each team.  Also, bitterness.  You'll get lots of that too.  So here we go!

Fixing the Flames: Management E-mail

Welcome to The 4th Line Blog's post-mortem/solutions-oriented article on the 2009-2010 Flames. I've decided to make this a three part series-one on management, two on the players. Enjoy!

March 4th, 2009. To Phoenix, a first round pick, Brandon Prust, and Matthew Lombardi. To Calgary, the Sex Panther himself, Olli Jokinen. Now, at the time, many were excited-Darryl Sutter had finally found the number one centre the Flames and Jarome Iginla had needed for so long. I'll admit, I was pretty happy with the player coming back, but I also thought too much had been given up for him. But then he played his first game as a Flame, and I rejoiced. As time went on, though, the trade was further dissected, and less and less accolades were given to Jokinen and Sutter, and eventually Jokinen was shipped out of town.

Now, why is this relevant? This is the point where Darryl Sutter's equilibrium (thanks Kent) became permanently pointed downwards. Every move he has made since then has been bad or barely broken even. That trade inspired me to take a look back at the upper management's reign since 2003.

I think most would agree with me when I say that if something is going to change in this franchise, it needs to be nuked from the top (King) down (Sutter’s). Now, in my opinion, there is still enough here, at least personnel-wise that a team with one more piece can be a NW division champ. But Darryl has done things that will prevent the team from picking up that piece. Even if you were to ignore the salary cap, the current upper management group hasn't exactly made the 'Dome feel like a warm and fuzzy place. The arrogance, conceitedness, pomposity and general scorn towards players and the media have turned many a fan or reporter against the current regime. So, with that in mind, I present part one of my plan to fix the Flames next year and beyond.

Wouldn't It Be Nice E-mail

Wouldn't it be nice if GMs and other club execs had to speak the truth? Wouldn't it be nice if there was no double talk or bs? Wouldn't it be nice if we were older? Wouldn't it be nice to live together?

Well today was not a day that those dreams were realized. Except the getting older part.  Today, Darryl Sutter and Ken King held a press conference, and, well, here's a few snippets after the jump:

As my loyal reader can likely see, we are no longer on Wordpress. No, Bloguin has adopted us into its network and much like Ken Hitchcock following a trail of candies, Justin and I are gladly following them along.

For those new to the 4th Line Blog, we're a blog of snark, stark looks at reality, and occasional goofiness regarding the Calgary Flames.  We try and stay active in the Saddlesphere (Flames Blogosphere) and keep in touch with other writers.

I've been a Flames fan since the early 2000's, despite never having been to Calgary (or Canada, until this past December), however the other writer here, Justin, is a born and raised Calgarian.

We're both looking forward as well as feeling honored to be a part of the same community as so many other esteemed hockey blogs (I started listing them, then gave up because there were too many and you probably read them anyways since you're cool enough to read us).

So here's to Bloguin, Calgary, and seeing Darryl Sutter sent on his way.

Justin Sayz: I am extremely excited to be here. Big props to Arik and the Bloguin guys for getting this all set up. It will take a couple days to get used to all of the new surroundings, but it's a good time to be a reader and a writer. So, everyone, enjoy!

In a rare simultaneous  burst of creativity and effort, I used my limited Illustrator skills to put this together. I have zero interest in making money off of it, so any profit will go to the Red Cross.

I've let my vitriol towards Darryl out in little bits and spurts this season, mostly after the deadline, but I think it's time to get comprehensive on this bitch. I think there are 4 main problems with Darryl as GM, here's an overview.  I'll go a lot more indepth after the current awards series is over.
